Nursing services is the backbone of health care delivery system representing over 50% of the health profession. They play very significant roles in providing health care services in the hospital and at the community level. These profession need to be strengthened, not on a narrow professionalism, but on a broad understanding of nursing contribution to improve the health care services.
Health care delivery is highly laboured- intensive, with nurses playing critical role to provide quality health care and we must take collaborative action to improve nursing and midwifery services. There is need to increase the knowledge and skills of nurses to provide high standard quality care. Effective education and training is the bedrock of professional practice, which aims to provide the highest standards of care for patients, families and wider community. Ensuring that nurses are prepared today and into the next century represents a significant challenge to those involved in the provision of education and training. The quality of service of tomorrow depends on the investment in nursing education today. Therefore, with the establishment of any new services, it is equally important to build up nursing profession in specialized areas.
The Five Year Plan in 1961 brought a new era with regards to modern health Few nursing aid who had no formal training After the establishment of health school in January 1974, nursing training has been instituted in regular training program Currently there are total of 516 nursing personnel serving from hospital to BHU level

o We believe nursing service must manage and give the highest degree of quality, comprehensive patient and family centered care to the patients to maintain or regain the highest level of wellness
o We believe that the emphasis of this service must be on the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of the patient who is seen as an individual as a member of the society
o We believe that nursing care of the highest standard demands a working environment which is conducive to the professional, emotional and social growth of all persons

o Enhancement of grades of all nursing personnel
o Thirty senior GNMs have completed their 2 years of Bachelor of Nursing conversion course
o Nurses are rewarded opportunity to pursue further studies eg. Masters and in any specialized fields
o The Royal Civil Service Commission has approved the senior position to provide career advancement for the nurses and midwives
o Nursing personnel has received Druk Thugsey in recognition of the service
